POLAR PLUNGE a GREAT SUCCESS!

It was a beautiful cold, sunny, blue sky, fall day this past Saturday;  32 degrees F at noon when the Rye Varsity and Modified Hockey Teams and Coaches (in pink tutu’s!) took to the beach at Glen Island Park, in New Rochelle, NY  and plunged into the 51 degree F Long Island Sound water!

Their enthusiasm and smiling faces has raised almost $10,000 for Special Olympics!

BUT WAIT! There is STILL TIME to DONATE!  Click on this link and be a part of this unique event!

Coach Peter Thomas said this about the event “I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to each and every one of you. When it was all said and done, we raised right around $10,000 for Special Olympics!  It was definitely a challenge braving the icy waters, but that challenge was insignificant compared to the challenges faced by the Special Olympics athletes and their families each and every day. I am so proud of all the players and their willingness to put all their efforts into such a good cause. It is a positive statement about them, their families, and the community. I am so grateful to live in and teach in such a wonderful community that is always willing to pitch in for a worthy cause. Furthermore, I am so humbled and grateful to be coaching a group of outstanding young adults!  I know that as long as we put forth the same effort on the ice that we did for this cause, we will be hoisting a Sectional Championship this season!”

As you look at the photos below, think of these accolades:

“The team had spirit, camaraderie and good fun at the plunge today. It was a pleasure to watch. Thanks to the coaches for setting the example and kudos to all who took the plunge.”  Gail Kamer

“Hockey is more than just a sport, as you have shown our [student athletes] and community today.” Cynthia Deen

This is the first of the Rye Varsity Hockey Program’s  THREE  charity events this season; the next one is Hockey vs. Hunger in January and then Hockey Fights Cancer in February! The Garnet’s Hockey Program looks forward to working with the community to make these remaining two events a success also!
