A Close Loss 3-2
Turkey, gravy, stuffing and high school hockey! What could be better on a Thanksgiving Saturday night? The Rye High School Varsity Hockey Team opened its 2014-2015 season on the road this past Saturday night against the Mount Pleasant Ice Cats at the Westchester Skating Academy in Elmsford. The Ice Cats defeated the Garnets 3-2 in front of a very good turnout on this holiday weekend by the Rye fans.
This was a tightly contested game, but too many penalties finally caught up to the Garnets. Coach Thomas said “It was a tough game. Mt. Pleasant plays a gritty game and they keep coming at you. I felt that getting into so much penalty trouble in the second hurt the flow of our game. Ultimately, I was happy with the effort that we had in the 3rd period and that if we had another 5 minutes, we at least tie that game and maybe go on to win it.”
The Garnets started the first period strong, but Mt. Pleasant fed off the momentum generated from their two power play’s. The Ice Cats scored in the last minute of the first period to take a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
The second period saw Derek Mullane score an unassisted, pure determination goal within the first 2 minutes of the period; he went end to end and buried a top shelf wrist shot to tie the game. But more penalties began to hurt the Garnets. Having to kill 3 more penalties at the end of the second period finally caught up with the Garnets as they surrendered a power play goal to Mt. Pleasant in the last minute of the frame, leaving them down 3-1 at the end of the period.
But the third period was all Garnets, after killing off a remaining Mt. Pleasant power play, they dominated the period. Captain Mullane scored again! This time calling for the puck by slapping his stick on the ice in the slot, he buried a beautiful feed from Rocco Macri and Theo Bresolin to bring the Garnets to within one goal. Unfortunately the Garnets could not find the equalizer goal and the game ended 3-2. Let’s hope the Garnets carry their third period play into Wednesday night’s Home Opener at Playland!
Highlights of the game: Derek Mullane scored two goals, assisted by Rocco Macri and Theo Bresolin; the Mt. Pleasant outshot the Garnets 21-18 ; Rye went 0/2 on the power play versus Mt. Pleasant going 1/6. Mt. Pleasant’s Oscar Marchi also scored 2 goals in the game.

New Captains and Alternates for 2014 -2015
As previously announced Senior Defenseman Derek Mullane was named a Captain of the Rye High School Varsity Hockey Team for 2014-2015. On Saturday night just prior to the game, Senior Goalie Nat Deen was also named a Captain, and Theo Bresolin and Tommy O’Brien were named Alternate Captains for the 2014-2015 season. Congratulations to all!
