Rye Defeats John Jay 4-1 in First Rivalry Game of 2015

John Jay Scoreboard

A series of tests and opportunities await the Garnets in January and February. The first of which was the John Jay Cross River Indians who came to Playland looking for revenge – it was a big rival game for them. Rye has won the last THREE contests versus the Indians, including the 6-3 win in the Section 1 Semi-Final game last season (the two D2 teams meet annually in the regular season and frequently in the playoffs). The Indians are coached by Alex Smith, a Rye Varsity Hockey alumnus (goalie).

FIVE Garnet names were on the score sheet by the end of the match.

The Player of the Game as selected by Coach Thomas was DEREK MULLANE with the game winning goal and a very strong defensive game.

COACH PETER THOMAS said “I’m happy with the result of the John Jay game. Obviously it’s important to beat Division 2 rivals because you want to send a message that it will be more of the same if we meet in the playoffs”.

THEO BRESOLIN had 2 goals (the first and the last), DEREK MULLANE scored the game winner, and fellow defenseman AIDAN LAVELLE also scored (his second in the last 3 games!). TOMMY O’BRIEN and ROCCO MACRI each had two assists.

Goalie NAT DEEN faced 34 shots and turned away all but one of them.

The Garnets outshot the Indians 37 to 34 . Power plays were not a factor in the game.

NEXT UP the “BATTLE FOR RYE Part 1” (local bragging rights!)

The Garnets take on the Rye Country Day Wildcats twice this season, once in both January and February and the Garnets will be looking for revenge and local bragging rights beginning on Wednesday January 14th at Playland at 7:45pm.

Why is this game important? The Garnets have lost the last two annual meetings to the Wildcats getting beaten on the score board and physically pushed around. Additionally, the “hot” Garnets are now 5-6-0 on the season and riding a 4 game win streak; a win against RCDS will bring them to 0.500 at the 12 game mark of the 20 game season and will extend their win streak.

So COME OUT and CHEER your Garnets on – having a strong Rye fan turnout will give the team the home team “sixth skater”!

There will also be something SPECIAL just prior to puck drop – come out and see the SURPRISE!

REMEMBER the Garnets play EVERY WEDNESDAY in JANUARY at PLAYLAND at 7:45pm !
